Flawless Start to Let’s Dance Festival

Flawless

Flawless kicked off the Let’s Dance Festival this Sunday April 29th with a spectacular routine at the Athena in the heart of Leicester’s Cultural Quarter. The group, famed for their appearances on ITV show Britain’s Got Talent and the StreetDance movies, celebrated the International Day of Dance by wowing onlookers with a series of jaw dropping routines. The performance was originally scheduled to take place outside at Orton Square but had to be moved due to heavy rain.

Let’s Dance is part of the Cultural Olympiad and runs from May 12th-27th. The festival will showcase a host of new companies and international dance styles from the Caribbean, South Africa, Namibia, India and Spain.

Pawlet Brookes, Director of Serendipity the company which hosts Let’s Dance said

“We thought it was important on this the International Day of Dance and the opening of Let’s Dance to have a performance from a group that would attract a large audience and appeal to young people. This is a free event so gives people a taster and introduces them to dance. As well as Flawless we also had local talent performing with Leicester group Addict”.

Truly an international festival Let’s Dance features artists from across the globe. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jamaican independence the Ruckumbine dance troupe will be travelling to the city to perform a new piece entitled L’Acadco which explores the country’s history. Indian dancers will also make their way to Leicester when Bollywood actress Isha Sharvani leads the visual spectacular Shiva Shakti.

Peter Knott, Arts Council England’s Regional Director for the East Midlands said

“The Let’s Dance Festival is only in its second year but it has already become a really important event in terms of its ambition and quality. It’s an international festival that celebrates diversity and is part of the Cultural Olympiad. It’s the type of event that we are very happy to support”.

Let’s Dance will take place in several venues across Leicester including Curve, Embrace Arts and the LCB Depot. The festival will feature one regional and two world premieres.
