From the slums of Mumbai to the ‘king’ of comedy

Johny LeverBollywood comedian Johny Lever will be entertaining audiences in the city of Leicester over this bank holiday weekend.

He is returning to the UK after a gap of seven years and will be performing on stage alongside supporting acts Gaurav Sharma and D Mahesh on Sunday 6th and Monday 7th May at De Montfort Hall.

The actor, who originally comes from the slums of Dharavi in Mumbai, has acted in over 400 films since his career began in 1984, and has three Filmfare awards to his name.

However, he continues to remain as humble as ever and even credits his modest upbringing for the success he has achieved today. In Dharavi he said, you would get to meet people from all backgrounds who were such characters and I learnt so many things from that place.

When asked to pick his favourite film, Johny said he thoroughly enjoyed working in ‘Baazigar’, ‘Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega’ and the very recent ‘Houseful 2’.

He also revealed to Pukaar News, that his favourite film directors are directing-duo Abbas Mustan as they give him the freedom to be himself, and help get the best out of him as an actor.

However, he also added that working in the Bollywood film industry today is a lot different compared with when he started acting back in the day. He feels that not only has the art of comedy changed, but the lifestyle and process of film making has become so fast, that sometimes film makers are losing the human touch of story telling and sacrificing this for flashy action sequences and special effects.

He’s worked with some of the biggest superstars to date from Amitabh Bachchan to Shah Rukh Khan, but for Johny Lever performing on stage is his first love and he hopes to leave the people of Leicester laughing very hard.
