‘King of Dhol’ to appear on the big screen

Gurcharan Mall famously referred to as King G Mall will be part of a brand new documentary making its debut at a cinema screen in Leicester on November 11.

Produced by Pukaar News, the documentary will focus on King G Mall’s journey from his humble background in Punjab to finding unprecedented success as a dhol player in the UK.

King G Mall said: “I Just started playing the dhol as a hobby at school, then at college and I then formed a band. In the 44 years of my music life there have been lots of ups and downs but I’ve kept my head high and am still doing it. I’m happy that I have the opportunity to help other youngsters and am fortunate that through my music I am able to help so many charities.”

When asked how he felt when he was approached for the documentary, he added: “When Romail approached me I was over the moon. People don’t approach musicians it’s usually always the singers who get the money, fame and recognition. I was really happy and felt good inside knowing there was someone out there who recognised my work.”

Pukaar News Managing Editor Romail Gulzar said: “I wanted to film this documentary because I don’t think there is enough focus on musicians. People always focus on singers, but it is the musicians that help make them successful and King G Mall’s contribution to the world of dhol is a fascinating story.”

The documentary will be premiered at the Phoenix Square, Midland Street in Leicester and will also be featured as part of the DocFilm Festival taking place across the city.

A number of special guests will be in attendance at the screening, including Bollywood playback singer Rafaqat Ali Khan, Assistant City Mayor Councillor Manjula Sood and former High Sheriff of Leicestershire, Resham Singh Sandhu MBE DL, to name a few.

Gurcharan Mall, Romail Gulzar and Simon Ward will also participate in an exclusive Q&A session.

The project has been supported by Anand International and Daewoo International.
