Lead Theft Continues to be a problem for Leicestershire Churches

The theft of lead from church roofs continues to be a major problem in Leicestershire.  Just this week over 3 tonnes of lead was stolen from St. Mary’s Church in Cotesbach near Lutterworth.

 

Liz Hudson, communications director for the Diocese of Leicester said “Fundamentally it has a huge impact on finances, the lead cannot be replaced by insurance, when the lead is taken, the water pours through the roof if it rains and damage is really extensive, do they therefore pursue keeping their church open at tens of thousands of pounds worth of repairs or sometimes of its a small village church do they sometimes have to close the place
