Free Walking Festival Begins in Leicester

A month-long programme of free walks exploring Leicester’s environment, heritage and hidden history has begun.

The Walk Leicester Festival includes a series of guided walks throughout May, taking in both some of the city’s historic sites and its lesser-known environmental and architectural gems.

Walks in Leicester range from exploring the trail of King Richard III to discovering the city’s waterside habitats.

“People can learn more about the city’s medieval history, its Victorian architectural or the railways from its industrial past,” said a spokesman.

“Leicester has a lot to offer and the Walk Leicester Festival in May is the perfect excuse to explore the city on foot.”

The festival is taking place as part of National Walking Month – a campaign to encourage more people to get outdoors and take some gentle exercise.

The walks are free to take part in, with the next taking place on Thursday (May 4), between 11am and 12.15pm.

The route will take in former leisure and entertainment venues in Leicester, with participants required to meet at Town Hall Square, off Horsefair Street.

Details of all the events, and to sign up for the walks, are available at the Choose How You Move website at: https://www.choosehowyoumove.co.uk/walkleicester/
