Antoin Akpom Remembered at Memorial Event to Raise Funds for Funeral

Over 150 people attended a fundraising event commemorating the life of murdered 20 year old Antoin Akpom.  The event called “United 4 Change” took place at Leicester’s Y Theatre on the 16th of October. It was attended by family and friends alike to remember a friend, colleague, father and son. The event not only sought to highlight Akpom’s achievements within the community but also to raise awareness of street crime and its devastating effects.

Mr Akpom, a coach for the youth football team Leicester Nirvana FC, passed away last month after a knife attack on Kent Street in Leicester.  Two 19 year old men have formerly been charged in relation to the incident.

The event featured a range of performances from poets, musicians and MCs alike and was a place for the community of Leicester to unite in remembrance. All the money raised from the event will contribute towards Mr Akpom’s funeral which is set to take place next week. Any surplus from this will be given to his young son.  In addition his friends and well-wishers have also started a collection where they manage to raise £1500. It is hoped that the event will have helped promote the importance of peace and that people will take more constructive steps in achieving it.
