Thousands of people from across the country attended Leicester’s Diwali celebrations on Thursday night. The festivities took place on the famous Golden mile and Cossington Street Recreation Ground.
Diwali, known as the festival of light, is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains throughout the world. The annual Leicester event is run by Leicester City Council and the Leicester Hindu Festival Council and culminates in a large firework display in Cossington park and is said to be one of the largest Diwali celebrations outside of India.
Nina Prattu a dancer performing with a group from University of Leicester said, “Its always been amazing, we did it last year, we’re doing it again, the crowd is just great, there always cheer us on, its great”
Everyone who spoke to Pukaar News had something positive to say about the event, “It’s been great, I live in Canada, I’ve never been to a big Diwali festival like this before, its really fun”.
“They bring something new every year, and the atmosphere is really nice, so its good, and its not cold today either”.
“I’m from Manchester and to bring something like this at this scale, with this many communities, this many cultures in to one place is really brilliant”.
