Leicester Cathedral’s gift to the city and county

Working with international artistic collaboration Luxmuralis, Leicester Cathedral have created a free gift for the people of Leicester, Leicestershire, and further afield. This idea comes from the team considering how to celebrate and mark the first steps of the city and country coming out of lockdown.

Titled ‘Light’, the artwork combines a stunning fine art projection accompanied by an originally composed musical track, by David Harper. This ethereal son et lumière, created by Peter Walker, is projected onto the façade and spire of the Cathedral.

A short video of this piece is now available to see for free on the Cathedral YouTube channel.

“Lockdown has been so hard with much loss and grief but we know light still shines. This is our gift of light to everyone in Leicester and Leicestershire,” said David Monteith, Dean of Leicester.

“We were hoping that Light would be a live in-person and full immersive event in Cathedral Gardens, but due to the change in Covid regulations and guidelines over the last few months, this had to be postponed. Working closely with Leicestershire Police, we decided, audience free and Covid safe, to record this event in order to create an online version.”

The Luxmuralis project has been funded by the Arts Council Cultural Recovery Fund.
