Leicester Hockey Club Heading for League Safety

Leicester Hockey Club continued their consecutive winning streak on Saturday after defeating recently crowned indoor hockey champions East Grinstead 2-1 at home.

Now sitting in seventh place in the Investec National Premier League table, Leicester are yet another step closer to securing their place within the Women’s Premier Division.

The second game of the half season saw the first team make a total transformation in order to defeat the fourth placed league team in the bitter weather.

On a rather dismal windy and rainy day the Leicester ladies fought hard from the 2pm whistle and saw them gain a high possession percentage and turnovers across all areas of the pitch.

East Grinstead were first to score through a direct strike on a short corner which Leicester counteracts three minutes later with goal from Rachel Mack’s short corner strike.

Goal two for Leicester came from a strong run from new player Laura Evans who was recruited for Leicester’s indoor campaign and soon made an impact in the outdoor game.

Laura managed to break through the East Grinstead defence finding herself with a one-on-one face off at goal with the keeper who knocked the ball from Laura’s stick and into the left hand corner where Katie Long fired a fantastic reverse stick shot past the keeper and into the top right hand netting.

With Leicester clinching onto the lead going into the second half East Grinstead continued to attack but our ladies held on strong and finished the game on a 2-1 high.

Notable performances came from Nikki Laybourne for her superb defending, Sarah Cockayne for several last ditch tackles, and Katie Long and Rachel Mack who together caused the opposition many problems up front with their impeccable link ups.

Following two consecutive wins spirits in the Leicester ladies camp must be high, and we hope they continue this forward with their finals games of the season.

This Saturday the first team face bottom of the table Buckingham with another 2pm pushback home at Leicester Grammar School, all support is welcome.
