SHOWSTOPPING ST GEORGE’S DAY KNIT RAISES SMILES IN SYSTON

A Syston knitting legend has struck once again by creating a showstopping postbox topper in time for St George’s Day.

The anonymous Syston Knitting Banxy (SKB) has created a George and Dragon postbox topper in time for the national event, which falls on Saturday (April 23).

SKB has drawn national attention in the past for her knitted creations, during the Covid-19 pandemic, with some even going viral.

Her work even got royal approval back in last year, after she sent a card to Buckingham Palace featuring a topper of the Queen.

She received an official reply from her Majesty saying “we thank her for her work”.

The latest topper has been met with appreciation in the village, with many praising its ability to make people smile.

“Your handiwork continues to enrich our lives. Thank you”, wrote one appreciative member of the community online.

“Fantastic! Another great knit to bring smiles to people’s faces”, added another.

“My motivation is predominantly to raise a smile and a little cheer in the local community”, said the Syston Knitting Banxy in a message to Pukaar News.

“My anonymity is important to me because I don’t need to be known, and my reward is to read the lovely comments from people for the Syston Knitting Banxy’ – a name I was given in a comment for the first topper I created, which was the Easter chicks in 2019”, she added.

“In fact, it is so important to me that I don’t give telephone interviews or TV interviews, even though I have been assured that my voice can be changed and that I can appear in silhouette”, she added. “And besides, the locals love the charm of a mystery!”

A description put with the latest piece, has also been met with approval from members of the community, for educating people on the story behind St George’s Day.

“The topper regales the tale first recorded in the 11th century, of the dragon slain by St George to save a much loved princess from her sacrificial fate”, it reads.

“However St George is believed to have been an officer in the Roman army, possibly of Greek descent, who was executed on April 303AD because he refused to give up his Christian faith.”

SKB’s latest creation can be seen on Syston High Street.
