“He’s an icon, he’s a legend, and he is the moment,” said one social media user, writing on the University of Leicester’s Instagram page.

“Absolutely love it, after the last few years we’ve had,” said another.

Mr Smith, who is known to his friends as OJ, said that he “just wanted to do something fun after a difficult few months.”

“I’m not one for formalities so seeing everyone go up on the stage being very sensible and giving a nice wave to the crowd, I thought ‘why not do something a bit more fun,” added the 23-year-old.

The graduation ceremony was the University of Leicester’s first in-person ceremony since January 2020.

Professor Nishan Canagarajah, president and vice-chancellor at the University of Leicester, said: “Every member of the community has faced unprecedented challenges over the last two years but, here at Leicester, we have been thrilled at the positive attitude and response shown by our students.

“Everyone celebrates in different ways, but I was delighted to see OJ’s obvious passion reflected on the graduation stage.

“We are hugely proud of him, and each and every one of our graduates who celebrated with us in 2022.”
