Leicester’s Diwali Day Celebrations Light Up the City

Thousands of people from across the country came to Leicester last night to watch the annual Diwali celebrations.

 

Around 37,000 people attended the festivities which took place on Leicester’s Golden Mile and Cossington Street Recreation Ground.

 

 

Diwali, known as the festival of light, is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains throughout the world.  The annual Leicester event is run by Leicester City Council and the Leicester Hindu Festival Council and culminates in a large firework display.  The celebrations in Leicester is said to be one of the largest Diwali celebrations outside of India.

 

There was a large stage set up on the park with, Bollywood and Bhangra dancers performing in front of a large crowd, while dhol drummers and dancers performed on the Golden Mile.
