The challenging but extremely rewarding role requires candidates to be fully representative of the communities of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, no matter what background or community they themselves are from.

This not only builds confidence in the communities the force serves, but also enables effectiveness when preventing crime and bringing offenders to justice, whilst providing better support to victims and witnesses.

Chief Constable Simon Cole said: “We’re really keen that people from all the different diverse communities in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland join us to be police officers or staff members. It’s a great job, I speak as someone who was once rejected by Leicestershire Police and finally got back in by becoming the Chief Constable.

“For the role, you need an equivalent of a level 3 academic qualification but most of all; you need common sense and a sense of humour.”

Understanding the different barriers that people often face when applying for these roles, Leicestershire Police are implementing positive action initiatives to offer advice and support.

Leicestershire Police’s Positive Action Officer Karolina Zalewska said: “My role focuses mainly on underrepresentation within the force. I try to encourage individuals from all different communities within Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to join us, whether they want to be police officers, staff members or volunteers. There are plenty of roles within the force for everyone to do something.

“Everyone has different questions, some are personal and some are cultural, and that’s what my role is, not just to provide HR information and how to complete an application form, but it’s to be able to open those doors for individuals from different communities and backgrounds and show them that policing could be for them as well.”
