Run in memory of Leicester man, 28, who passed away suddenly while out jogging

An annual fun run which was set up in memory of a popular Leicester student will take place this weekend at the city’s Victoria Park.

This year’s ‘Run for Redfern’ will take place this Sunday (March 10) in memory of Adam Redfern. He passed away in 2021 after suffering a cardiac arrest while out for an evening jog.

A popular and driven 28-year-old was recently named ‘Alumnus of the Quarter’ by De Montfort University, where he graduated in journalism before joining the communications team.

For almost five years, Adam was at the heart of DMU’s social media channels, infusing posts, campaigns and coverage with his friendly voice and creative ideas, giving the university a popular online presence.

“While Adam undoubtedly had a promising future ahead of him, this posthumous award recognises all that he achieved in a short time and the lasting impact he had on DMU staff and students,” said a spokesman.

“In his warmth and his friendliness, in his willingness to get involved in something new, in his humour and open-hearted love of meeting new people, in the way in which he seized on every opportunity he could in his short life, Adam really was the best of DMU in one person.”

Adam’s parents, Ian and Christine Redfern, commented: “If Adam was still with us, we know that he would be deeply honoured, albeit slightly embarrassed, to receive this recognition. On his behalf, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to those who have put his name forward for this award. It’s something we will look on with pride.”

The 5k fundraising fun run will start at Victoria Park at 11am and will follow a route down New Walk and across DMU campus, ending at its student union. It costs £5 to take part. All funds will enable ambitious students to pursue Adams passions and will help to boost their career opportunities with the support of the university through dedicated scholarships, bursaries and monetary awards.
